Inside the Ethics Committee

20 Jul 2010 (updated: 20 Jul 2010)

Should a mentally ill man who believes his life-saving surgery is a conspiracy to kill him be forced to have treatment?

That's the subject for debate on the latest edition of ‘Inside the Ethics Committee' on Radio 4. On the programme, which is hosted by Joan Bakewell, a panel of experts will debate the story and complex ethical issues arising in the life of John, a man who has cancer of the voice box.

Removing John's voice box could save his life but he is refusing to go ahead with the operation. John has schizophrenia and believes the operation is a conspiracy to kill him.
