Adult Mental Health Services

Voluntary sector

The Wales Alliance for Mental Health provides the collective voice of the national voluntary organisations in Wales working in the field of mental health.

Senior Officers of Mental Health National Voluntary organisations working in Wales began meeting on an informal basis in 1994 with the aim of sharing information on matters of mutual interest. Following devolution, it was considered that the Alliance should be established on a more formal basis.

Membership of the Alliance currently consists of the following organisations:-

Alzheimer's Society website
Cruse Bereavement Care Cymru website
Depression Alliance Cymru website
Hafal website
Manic Depression Fellowship Wales website
US Network website
AWETU website
Mind Cymru website

(For training information on Mind's Mental Health First Aid course, which offers mental health training "for everyone" please visit: http://www.mhfa-wales.org.uk/)

The purpose of the Alliance is to:

  • provide an inclusive national voice for the voluntary sector
  • lobby and campaign on national issues including resources
  • stimulate development of good practice and innovation within the sector
  • obtain and disseminate information e.g. from the National Assembly for Wales
  • promote the role of the voluntary sector

Alliance activities include:

  • Participation in the work of the steering group which drafted the Adult Mental Health Strategy for Wales
  • Participated in the discussions on the drafting of the National Service Framework for Wales
  • Representation on several of the NHS Plan Task and Finish Groups Care
  • Arranged a workshop for members to discuss the consultation document on the Future Structure of the NHS in Wales which resulted consensus on arrangements for commissioning of mental health services
  • The Alliance acts as a single conduit for the Assembly to consult with the National Voluntary organisations

For details of local projects not necessarily affiliated to national voluntary organisations we recommend that you contact members of the Association of Mental Health Voluntary Networks. These Networks bring together voluntary groups in their area to promote local co-operation and act as a local voice on mental health issues:-
