Hafal, Wales’ leading new mental health charity, is to be launched on Thursday 3 July 2003 by the First Minister. Rhodri Morgan will welcome a sponsored team who are cycling from Llandudno to Cardiff before formally launching the charity outside the National Assembly.
Peter Davey, Chair of Hafal says : “This is a big step forward for mental health in Wales. We have an outstanding therapeutic team of 85 dedicated staff and many volunteers who will be working with the Assembly and our colleagues in Health and Social Services. Our message is one of optimism and hope, offering practical support to help people to recover mental health and lead happy and useful lives”.

Edwina Hart A.M. has been appointed as Minister of Social Justice and Regeneration and her new department is being formed within the Assembly Civil Service.
Hafal Chief Executive, Bill Walden-Jones comments: “Although Jane Hutt as Minister of Health and Social Services remains the key Minister for mental health matters Edwina Hart’s department will also be very important in two respects : people with a mental illness are high priority in the general social inclusion agenda in Wales; and the department’s remit for the voluntary sector will obviously be important to Hafal and other voluntary sector organisations working in the mental health field”.
