Bennett inquiry : action needed now

Hafal has called on the Welsh Assembly Government to tackle the scandal of institutional racism in the NHS by implementing the recommendations of the Rocky Bennett inquiry findings as a matter of urgency.

The inquiry, published on Thursday, followed the tragic death of David “Rocky” Bennett, a 38 year old African Carribean man with schizophrenia, who died in 1998 after being restrained by nurses at the Norvic clinic, a medium secure unit in Norwich. The inquiry found that institutional racism is ‘endemic’ in the NHS and makes 22 wide ranging recommendations.
