Festival to hold talks on mental health

HowTheLightGetsIn, the Hay-on-Wye based philosophy and music festival is to hold talks and debates on mental health and psychiatry at their event which takes place from May 26th – June 5th.

Topics for debate include the following:

Baroness Molly Meacher, Chair of the East London NHS Foundation Trust and former Mental Health Act Commissioner, on the future of arts provision in mental healthcare.

Vocal critic of psychiatry Richard Bentall on ‘Why Society Drives You Mad’, suggesting that social inequality, racism and the built environment have a far more significant role to play in mental illness than the biomedical establishment acknowledges.

The enormous therapeutic benefits of song. Professor Stephen Clift tells the story of his project setting up choirs for dementia sufferers and will lead the audience in a workshop on therapeutic vocal techniques.
